Classic Chicken Fried Cubed Steak

This is my favorite recipe for frying cubed steak. I like to double bread the meat to give it a nice coating and then fry it to a golden brown. To me, the coating makes this steak great!

I ask my family what they want for their birthday meal every year. My son and daughter usually request different foods for each birthday, but my husband always requests the same menu. He wants cubed steak, creamed potatoes, English peas, biscuits, and gravy every year. Every year! Now, I don’t even ask him what he wants, for the whole family already knows the answer.

I have been using this recipe for years, which always works great. The steak is always tender and juicy, and the coating is crispy and well-seasoned. Like I mentioned earlier, I like to double bread/batter my steak, for it makes a thicker and crunchier crust.

How to Make Classic Chicken Fried Cubed Steak

Combine buttermilk, eggs, and hot sauce in a bowl and mix well. Add the cubed steak, making sure it’s completely submerged in the buttermilk. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for 1-2 hours if you have time. If not, no worries, continue on with the recipe. It will still taste great.

In a bowl or large container, mix together flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and cayenne. **If you like it spicier, add more seasonings. You may also need more flour, so adjust as needed.

Take the cubed steaks out of the refrigerator (if you refrigerated it). Dip steaks one at a time in the flour mixture, coating both sides, then back again in the marinade mixture and again in the flour mixture.
Place on a baking sheet in a single layer while the oil heats.
Heat oil and fry over medium heat until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
