Versatile and Customizable: Guacamole can be served as a dip, a topping for tacos, or a spread on a wrap. You also control the heat by adjusting the amount of jalapenos you add.
How To Choose The Best Avocados
The key to making this homemade guacamole recipe is using the perfect avocado. Try to find ripe Hass avocados that yield with a gentle squeeze. Depending on the variety, they may change color from bright green to a darker shade. Ripe avocados typically have dark green to almost black skin. For best results, avoid mushy avocados or ones with mushy brown spots. If the avocado feels very firm, it is likely underripe, and if it feels overly soft or mushy, it may be overripe. Unripe avocados are hard and do not taste good. Haas avocados are my favorite and my personal preference.
Ingredients Needed for Guacamole
Simple, flavorful, and always a hit, it’s guaranteed to become a staple in your house. Please see the printable recipe card below for a complete list of ingredient amounts. These ingredients are easily found in most grocery stores year-round.
Avocados – Choose ripe avocados for this recipe. Scoop out the avocado flesh and mash with a fork Creamy avocados are the main ingredient and the star of the show and provide a creamy base.
Onion – I prefer to use a white onion for this basic guacamole recipe. Use what you have on hand. A red onion will work nicely and taste great.
Lime – Fresh lime juice adds a zesty kick and helps to prevent the avocados from browning. If you don’t have lime juice on hand, lemon juice will also work.
Garlic Powder – Garlic powder gives the avocados just the right amount of spice without being overpowering.
Salt and Pepper – Salt and Pepper are needed to create the perfect taste balance. Taste as you go and add as much as you like.
Jalapeno – Diced jalapeno adds just the right amount of heat for this recipe. Leave the seeds if you like a lot of heat, or remove them for less spiciness.
Cilantro – Fresh cilantro makes this guacamole fantastic. It gives it a burst of freshness and color.
