Brown the Beef and Vegetables. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, bell pepper, and onion until the meat is fully cooked. Drain excess grease.
Add the Sauce Ingredients. Reduce the heat to low and stir in garlic, seasonings, Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, and mustard. Mix until everything is well combined and heated through.
Simmer. Simmer for 7-10 minutes, letting the flavors meld and the sauce thicken.
Serve. Spoon the warm sloppy joe mixture onto hamburger buns and serve immediately.
Notes
Recipe TipsDon't add the sauce before draining the grease: If your ground beef produces a lot of grease, drain it before adding the sauce ingredients. Otherwise, the finished sauce can become greasy.Lower the heat: The sauce doesn't need to boil rapidly. Keep the heat low and let it gently simmer so the flavors have time to come together.Keep the mixture wet. Sloppy joes should be saucy. If the mixture thickens more than you like, add a splash of beef broth and stir until you reach your desired consistency.
