Ingredients Needed for Simple Sauteed Mushrooms
Mushrooms— For this recipe, I used Baby Bella mushrooms. I have mixed different varieties, and the outcome was delicious. Use your favorite mushrooms, and the result will be awesome.
Butter— 1 stick of butter is needed for this recipe. It sounds like a lot, but trust me on this. It adds such great flavor.
Minced Garlic— I like to buy minced garlic in the jar. It’s easy, it’s good, and it’s convenient. You can certainly use fresh garlic and still achieve great results.
Soy Sauce— Only 1 Tablespoon of soy sauce will work and give flavor to the mushrooms.
How to Cook Mushrooms
Wash mushrooms to remove any grit or dirt. Cut off the ends of the stems and discard. Set aside cleaned and prepared mushrooms.
Melt butter in a skillet over med-low heat.
Add minced garlic.
Add Soy Sauce.
Add mushrooms.
Saute for 15-20 minutes over medium-high heat. (see notes)
Serve warm.
*Notes–Try not to stir too much. This allows the mushrooms to caramelize some and brings out more flavor. The key to having flavorful mushrooms is to allow them to caramelize in the butter, garlic, and soy sauce.
*All stoves cook differently. Adjust the heat to keep from burning your mushrooms or cooking too fast.
How Long Do I Cook Mushrooms?
Cook for about 15 -20 minutes. Try not to stir too much. This allows the mushrooms to caramelize some and brings out more flavor. The key to having flavorful mushrooms is to allow them to caramelize in the butter, garlic, and soy sauce. Start by cleaning the mushrooms–wash or wipe– your choice, then add them to the pan and stir. Allow the mushrooms to cook (without stirring) for several minutes. This will caramelize the mushrooms and make them mouthwatering delicious. Cook for about 15-20 minutes. All stoves are different, so adjust your heat so your mushrooms cook and not burn.
How Do I Clean Mushrooms? Do I Wipe Or Wash Mushrooms?
Mushrooms should be cleaned right before you are going to cook them.
Now I know some will disagree with me on this, so I am giving you two options. Option 1: Honestly, I wash my mushrooms. I always have and probably always will. It’s okay to wash, just don’t leave them in water for too long. You are not bathing the mushrooms; you are just cleaning any dirt off of them. I have found that placing mushrooms in a bowl, filling it with cold water, and giving a quick swish will work and remove the dirt. Dry with a paper towel. OR Option 2: wipe the mushrooms with a damp cloth or paper towel to remove any dirt. Your choice– your mushrooms!
How Do I Select Mushrooms?
Look for mushrooms that are firm, with no bruises or marks. If they are slimy–keep looking–walk away.
How to Store Mushrooms
Store mushrooms in the refrigerator until ready to use. Keep them in their original packages and sealed. I sometimes purchase them up to 3 days before I cook them, and they stay fresh for me.
Do I Need to Peel Mushrooms for this recipe?
The answer is no. Simply cut off any marks or bruises. Also, trim the ends of the stems. These are usually hard and not tasty.
Sauteed Mushrooms for Steaks and Burgers
I love to serve these mushrooms alongside steaks and burgers. These make a perfect side dish and are pretty filling. They can certainly make a nice impression served with a steak, and when sliced, they are amazing on top of burgers.
Other Ways to Serve Sauteed Mushrooms as a Side Dish

Sticky Chicken

Tips and Variations for Making the Best Ever Sauteed Mushrooms
*Don’t overcrowd the pan with mushrooms. Choose a pan large enough to hold all of your mushrooms and cook at one time.
*Don’t stir too much. Allow the mushrooms to caramelize a bit before stirring.
*For more flavor, add white wine and sautee.
*If mushrooms are large, cut them in half.
*Add a few sprinkles of red pepper flakes to kick them up a notch.
*Cook some thinly sliced onions with the mushrooms.
*Add several varieties of mushrooms to the pan at one time.
*Cut off the ends of the stems before cooking.
You will end up with a perfect pan of golden brown sauteed mushrooms, and they are better than the ones you get at a steakhouse. They are tasty, buttery, garlicky, and very satisfying. They go great with just about anything your serve. You will be so glad you made these and surprised at how fast they come together.
