Homemade Creamy Tomato Soup

Although soup can be eaten year-round, my favorite time to enjoy a big bowl of steaming soup is during the winter months. Tomatoes, Garlic, Basil, and Heavy Cream come together to make this soup a true comfort food and a wonderful dinner option to warm your bones when the weather is cold.

As soon as the crisp fall days arrive, I begin to think about all of the different soups to make and eat. Among my favorites is this Homemade Creamy Tomato Soup.

My sister, Anna, introduced me to this delicious soup one weekend. She was home for a visit and whipped this up one evening for dinner. Wow, is all I can say! This soup was so simply delightful and filling. It satisfied everyone completely.

This soup works great with fresh or canned tomatoes. It isn’t easy to find good tomatoes that have a flavorful taste during the fall and winter months. I tend to turn to either my homemade canned tomatoes or store-bought canned tomatoes. All of these options have worked well for my sister and me.

What to Serve with Homemade Creamy Tomato Soup

We paired this soup with a Grilled Cheese sandwich, and it was the perfect side and made the most enjoyable comfort food. You might also decide to serve a side salad or some crusty French bread.

Tips for Making Creamy Tomato Soup

Canned or Fresh Tomatoes will work for this soup, and both will be delicious.

Use fresh Basil. This really makes a difference. Using the fresh Basil gives this soup a fresh from the garden taste even if you use canned tomatoes.

If you like chunky soup, only blend with the immersion blender a little at a time until you reach the desired consistency.

  1. Yum! I wish I had canned more tomatoes this year. I love to make soup, and I have an immersion blender, so I’m definitely saving this to try later. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

  2. I’ve never made homemade tomato soup before but this recipe looks absolutely fabulous! Thanks so much for sharing – I will definitely be trying this one before too long.

  3. Now that it is getting colder, I will definitely make this soup. I have become a bit lazy when it comes to tomato soup and always got it ready made from Tader Joe’s or Whole Foods. they are good but surely not as good as home made. I had a good crop of tomatoes from my garden this summer/fall and I have many pounds frozen. This is a perfect recipe to use all that garden bounty.

  4. Ohhh my goodness, this sounds AMAZING. I just had a grilled cheese for lunch and this would have been a perfect compliment. I will definitely be making this!
