Sweet Baked Vidalia Onion Dip

Vidalia Onion Dip is another easy dip that comes together fast and is requested by many family members and guests. It’s cheesy, creamy, and has lots of sweet onion flavor. This dip is always a party favorite and it’s hard to walk away from when served warm.

I’ve wanted to share this recipe with you for a while. It’s been sitting in my recipe file for quite some time. I’ve flipped past it for several years, thinking I’ll share it later. Well.. later has arrived!

Every year I order Vidalia Onions as a fundraiser from our local school. And I’m not talking about ordering 10 pounds. I usually order at least 50 pounds or so. I know, right? That’s a lot of onions!
So, what do you do with that many onions? You get creative, make a lot of dishes, and you eat a lot of onions.

What are Vidalia Onions?

Vidalia Onions are sweet onions only found in Georgia (USA). The special and unique taste comes from the soil, water, and weather. Therefore, these onions can only be grown in the state of Georgia. Each onion is hand planted, harvested, and cured each season. The season for these onions is very short– April through August. This is the reason I buy 50 pounds of Vidalia Onions during the spring. Are Vidalia Onions in Season Now?

Vidalia Onions only have a short season. April – August. They are shipped all over the USA. Check your local grocery store or order online. If you ever try a Vidalia Onion, you will be hooked! They are my favorite and hopefully will be yours too.

How to Store Vidalia Onions

I know you are probably asking, “What do you do with all of those Vidalia Onions?” I store most of them in my refrigerator. I have a large vegetable bin, and it will hold about 30 pounds of onions. I store the other 20 pounds in my pantry and use them first. They will last for months by storing them this way. I usually buy my onions in May, and they will stay fresh in my refrigerator until January.

Can I Make This Recipe if I Don’t have Vidalia Onions?

Yes, you can still make this recipe if you don’t have Vidalia Onions. Look in your produce section for another variety of sweet onions. They are there, I promise.

Should I Caramelize the Onions or Not?

Although some people like to caramelize the onions for dips, I don’t. Instead, I like to keep them raw. This seems to add to the crunch factor even after it’s cooked. The flavor of this Sweet Vidalia Onion Dip is amazing. You have to try it. But, the choice is totally yours as to caramelize or not.

Vidalia Onion Dip with Cream Cheese and Shredded Cheese

Oh yes! No dip is complete without a block of cream cheese. I mean, come on! Cream cheese and 2 cups of shredded cheese make this recipe out of this world. Choose your favorite shredded cheese for this recipe. I usually keep cheddar and mozzarella in my fridge. Use what you have, Cheddar, Mozzarella, Pepper Jack, Parmesan, Italian blend, Mexican mix; it will still be great. If you don’t like cheese– move over for me.

What Should I Serve with This Dip?

I have tried many types of chips for this delicious baked onion dip. Tortilla chips, Corn chips, Pita Chips, Veggies, Toasted Bread, Bagel chips, and Crackers are just a few of my favorites. Your favorite chips are needed for scooping and dipping. There really is no wrong answer.  Dig in your pantry and start looking for something crunchy to put this dip on.

How to Make Baked Onion Dip

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Spray a baking dish with nonstick spray. An 8×8 dish will work fine for this recipe.
Add all ingredients to the baking dish and mix well.
Bake at 375 degrees for about 40-45 minutes or until bubbly and hot.
Serve with tortilla chips.

Tips for the Best Vidalia Onion Dip

Dice onions into small pieces. This will allow them to cook evenly and soften. You don’t want a big chunk of onion in one bite.
If you feel the need to shred your cheese, go for it. I do at times, but for this dish, I used pre-shredded cheese.
I used 2 medium Vidalia Onions for this recipe, and that was plenty. If your onions are small, you may want to add another one to the mix. Hey, it’s onion dip; no need to have to hunt for onion.
This dish is best served warm from the oven. If you have leftovers, you can place them in a microwave-safe dish and reheat them in the microwave for a few seconds or until warm.
This dip is thick and perfectly scoopable. Great for your favorite dipping chip.
