There are some really good bbq sauces on the market shelves today. You will find honey, garlic, sweet, spicy, mustard, sticky, dark, light, and so on. And yes, I have a few in my pantry now. They are not expensive, and they save time when you are in a hurry. But, there are times when I like to make my sauce from scratch. And this is one of those times where I wanted and nice sticky sweet and spicy barbecue sauce. And in all fairness, I believe my Homemade Sweet and Spicy Barbecue Sauce tastes better than the store-bought brands.

In only a few steps, you too can have a bbq sauce your family and friends will love. Be warned; this is a spicy sauce. If you are serving this sauce on meats to family or friends, let them know ahead of time this sauce is not for the weak-mouthed person. No, seriously, it does have a kick, but my family (who is used to eating spicy cooking) can eat this sauce with no problem. It has just enough heat to savor and linger in your mouth after the first bite.

Why You’ll Love This Sriracha Barbecue Sauce

Siracha barbecue sauce is a delightful combination of heat with a slight sweetness. This is one of my favorite sauces, and here are reasons why it might be your favorite sauce too.

  • Spicy Kick of Heat: The Chili Garlic Sauce and the Sriracha hot sauce gives this bbq sauce a nice kick of heat.
  • Flavorful: The combination of spicy and sweet with the siracha and the brown sugar gives the homemade bbq sauce recipe a well-rounded flavor.
  • Versatility: This is a versatile sauce and makes a great dipping sauce for french fries, chicken wings, beef or pork ribs, and grilled meats. It’s excellent brushed-on meats while they are on the grill for more sticky flavor and spice.
  • Easy to Customize: You are in charge of the heat level. Add or subtract the chili garlic sauce or the sriracha as desired.
  • Simple to Make: It’s easy to grab a bottle of wing sauce at the grocery store, but it’s nice to make your own at home with the flavors you enjoy.

What To Add To Barbecue Sauce To Make It Spicy?

Chili Garlic Sauce and Sriracha Hot Sauce are the ingredients I use to make this sauce spicy. At the moment, I am in love with this Garlic Chili Sauce. I am using it in a lot of my recipes. It has a super spicy kick and adds thickness to the top of my meats or sauces. It’s kind of like a spicy sticky kick that gives my food just what I am looking for. If you are leery of the heat, use less and taste as you go. You be the judge as to when it’s hot enough for you. Even if you use less, the flavor and the spice will still be what you are looking for in a good sauce.
Chili Garlic Sauce is hot, spicy, tangy with just a touch of garlic. A little goes a long way. Again taste as you go and definitely use less if  so desired. It will leave a spiciness on your tongue after the first bite. You want to taste and enjoy your home-cooking, not blow a fuse while you are eating it.
Sriracha Hot Sauce is made of chili peppers, sugar, garlic, vinegar, and salt. Depending on the brand, the taste will vary. It’s basically tangy, sweet, garlicky, and spicy hot. And the label is correct– It’s HOT! If you are looking for a good hot sauce, I highly recommend this one.

Homemade Barbecue Sauce Ingredients

This is just an overview of the ingredients. For a complete list of ingredients, see the printable recipe card below. Most elements are simple pantry staples and can easily be found in your local grocery store. This delicious recipe can easily be adapted to your taste and your family’s taste. If you are serving this to children, go easy on the chili garlic sauce and the sriracha.

Garlic – I prefer to use the minced garlic in a jar. It’s easy and convenient.

Oil– Vegetable oil

Chili Garlic Sauce– Found in the International section of the grocery store. This is spicy, so a little will give the right amount of heat.

Soy Sauce – I like the taste of soy sauce in this recipe. Feel free to swap our Worcestershire sauce.

Brown Sugar – Add a nice balance of sweetness to the homemade barbecue sauce.

Apple Cider Vinegar – Adds a bite of flavor and tang.

Sriracha Hot Sauce– This is my favorite hot sauce. It’s spicy with a nice kick.

Black Pepper – Just a bit of seasoning.

How to Make Spicy Sriracha Sauce

In a small saucepan on the stove top over medium-low heat, saute garlic in oil over heat for about 2 minutes or until brown.
Add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and set aside until ready to use.

Great Homemade BBQ Sauce Recipe for Chicken Wings

This is one of my go-to recipes for wing nights for the family. This is a great recipe and usually gets rave reviews on wing night. There are a lot of great barbecue sauces out there, but a spicy bbq sauce is the best. Grilled wings are amazing, but if you need to roast them in the oven, they are just as tasty. Place wings in a single layer on a baking rack in the oven and cook until done. Then add them to a large bowl, pour the sriracha bbq sauce over the top, and mix well to coat the wings. Dig in and enjoy. You will need the whole roll of paper towels before you are finished.

Tips and Variations for Spicy Sriracha BBQ Sauce

Spiciness— if you are looking for a sauce with a little less spice, then cut back on the Chili Garlic Sauce and the Sriracha Hot Sauce. You can undoubtedly substitute ketchup to make up the difference in the ingredients.
Sweetness— If you like a sweet bbq sauce, add a little more brown sugar.
Thickness— If the sauce is too thick, dilute with a little more apple cider vinegar or water. Add a spoonful at a time until you get your desired consistency.
Add Molasses-– Molasses seems to be more bitter than sweet. It’s great for bbq sauce and is also great for balancing out the sweetness.
Ketchup— Keep in mind that some kinds of ketchup contain a lot of sugar. This will alter the taste depending on how much is substituted in this recipe.

Lime Juice: A squirt or two of lime juice will enhance the flavors.

Liquid Smoke: If you are roasting the wings in the oven, use just a splash of liquid smoke for that grilled taste.

Honey: Add some honey for more sweetness or to cut some of the heat.

Seasonings: Add more spices or seasonings as desired. I sometimes throw in chili powder, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, and onion powder. The choices are endless and entirely up to you and your desires.

Make Ahead: I sometimes like to make this sauce ahead of time. Just mix and heat, cool, and then refrigerate until ready to use. Store in a sealed container (airtight container) in the refrigerator. Double the recipe to make a larger batch for grill nights.

Spicy and Sweet BBQ Sauce

Sweet and Spicy BBQ sauce can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container until ready to use. A Mason jar with a lid works great. Use a clean spoon each time before dipping it into the jar. Also, the leftover sauce will be fine in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.  I usually don’t have any left when I make it for grilling. I tend to go heavy on the sauce and use all of it at one time. But, if you do have some left, it will store nicely in the refrigerator.

This sauce works well on grilled meats. It’s also lovely to use as a condiment for dipping and on sandwiches. It makes an excellent substitution for your favorite bbq sauce.

I’ve made homemade bbq sauce plenty of times, but I’ve never added molasses to mine; that seems like a great idea if you want a little bitter taste. I will try adding molasses next time when I make a bbq sauce because I like umami flavor. Thank you so much for the tips.

  2. I love that you add sriracha to this! It sounds delicious and we will have to try making our own next time we have bbq. Thanks for sharing!

Sounds fabulous and so unfussy! I have to admit that I’m lazy when it comes to BBQ sauce and just buy it. But…this could change that!
