Easy Homemade Barbecue Sauce
A delightful and Easy Homemade Barbecue Sauce for chicken, pork, burgers and more. This sauce is a spicy, sweet, and thick barbecue sauce that is full of flavor and has a slight kick!
Have you ever reached into your pantry for an item only to realize you were out of that item? Well, I have! I had planned to barbecue chicken for dinner, and I had everything ready for the grill. I reached into the pantry for the barbecue sauce –NO SAUCE!! Luckily, I had my barbecue sauce recipe on file. I pulled it out, whipped it up, and in just a few minutes my plans were back on track.
Now, when it comes to sauce, there are so many options to choose from. You have your thick, thin, spicy, sweet, hot, sticky, honey, tangy, mustard and the list goes on. Everyone has their favorite.
Make Your Barbecue Sauce From Scratch
This is a very simple barbecue sauce to make from scratch. I am sharing with you my barbecue sauce recipe that is thick and full of flavor. Although this sauce is great on it own, please feel free to add your favorite ingredients to the pot and adjust it to your taste. If you don’t like onions- leave them out. If you want a sweeter flavor- add some honey. The possibilities are endless.
Barbecue Sauce Ingredients:
Ketchup–This is the base for most bbq sauces.
Molasses–a thick, dark brown syrup used in cooking and baking and adds sweetness and flavor.
Brown Sugar–another sweetener and adds color
Apple Cider Vinegar–used to balance the flavors. I love using ACV whenever I can.
Mustard– I use yellow mustard for this recipe. It’s usually what I have on hand.
Seasonings from your cabinet–garlic powder, chili powder, salt and pepper
Onion–finely diced
Oil–I usually use vegetable oil for this recipe
Some add-ins might include:
*hot sauce
*honey
*coke
*hot peppers/sweet peppers
*cayenne pepper
*lemons
Just throw these in the pot and simmer away. Get creative and try new things!
Once you realize how easy it is to make barbecue sauce at home, you may think twice before you buy barbecue sauce again.
This sauce has lots of flavors, and I believe once you try it, you will love it. It’s easy to mix together, and in about 20 minutes you will have a delicious, thick, and flavorful sauce.

How to Use Barbecue Sauce
Add BBQ sauce to just about any grilled meats. I have found this goes great with chicken and pork. I have even added some of this homemade BBQ sauce to the top of my burgers.

Easy Homemade Barbecue Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups ketchup
- ¼ cup molasses
- ¼ cup Apple Cider Vinegar
- ½ cup Brown Sugar
- 1 tablespoon mustard
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- ½ onion finely diced
- salt and pepper
- 2 tablespoons oil
Instructions
- Add oil to a saucepan and cook onion on medium for about 5 minutes.
- Combine all ingredients in the same pan with the onion and bring to a simmer.
- Simmer for 10-15 minutes.
- Pour into a Mason Jar. Use immediately or refrigerate for up to a week.
