Fresh or Frozen Strawberries

Today I needed to use some fresh strawberries that were getting a little soft. I could have put them into the freezer, but I had something else in mind for these babies. This recipe is perfect for those months when you can catch berries on sale at the grocery store, can get them fresh from the produce market, or pick them yourself. If you have frozen strawberries on hand, they will certainly work for this recipe.

My daughter has wanted me to make a cake, so I decided to combine the cake and strawberries for a simple dessert. The more I thought about it, the more I decided that our cake needed a delicious cheesecake filling for the center. So, I made one of our favorite strawberry desserts–Strawberry Cheesecake Bowl. And it was fabulous!

Making the Cake

I made this dessert with a boxed yellow cake mix. If you are feeling the urge to bake a cake from scratch–go for it. That urge was not hitting me today, so the boxed cake won. And it was just fine for this dessert. I have also made this recipe with a pound cake, and it was equally as good.

Cheesecake Center

The cheesecake center is amazing. Cream cheese, powdered sugar, and Cool Whip are the only ingredients needed for this delicious center. It’s creamy and delicious. Cream cheese and Cool Whip are amazing together.

Pie Filling

For this recipe, I used a Homemade Strawberry Pie Filling. Do not let this scare you. Making a homemade pie filling is really easier than you might imagine. Here is my step by step process for making Homemade Strawberry Pie Filling.

You can certainly use a canned pie filling for this recipe. It will be fine. People will still love it. It will be delicious!

What Ingredients Do I Need to Make Layered Strawberry Cheesecake Bowl?

Layered Strawberry Cheesecake Bowl

1 Yellow Cake–follow package ingredients
2-3 cups Homemade Strawberry Pie Filling or 1-2 Cans Strawberry Pie Filling
1 8oz. block cream cheese
1 cup confectioners sugar
1 tub 8 oz. Cool Whip

How Do I Make Layered Strawberry Cheesecake Bowl?

Bake cake according to package directions.
While the cake is baking, make the homemade Pie Filling (if desired) or use a can or two of Pie Filling.
Allow cake and pie filling to cool completely.
Cut cake into 1-inch squares. Set aside.
Using a stand mixer, combine cream cheese and powdered sugar. Beat until smooth.
Fold in Cool Whip. Set aside.
To assemble the Strawberry Cheesecake Bowl: In a trifle dish or large bowl, place half of the cake squares in the bottom of the dish.
Top the cake with half of the cream cheese mixture.
Top the cream cheese mixture with one cup of the pie filling.
Repeat layers.
Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. This is better if you can allow 4-6 hours to chill.

Notes: If you decide to make homemade pie filling, you will NOT need to use all of it–unless, of course, you want to. No judging here! I like pie filling, so I chose to use more than I actually needed. The choice is yours. 🙂 Leftover pie filling is awesome on bagels for breakfast.

Bowl or Trifle Dish?

For the record, I usually call this dessert Strawberry Cheesecake Trifle, but I could not find my Trifle dish. I looked high and low. I searched the kitchen twice, looking in the pantry and the cabinets. I searched everywhere it could possibly be–No luck! So I changed the name of this dessert to Strawberry Cheesecake Bowl. It’s still the same recipe–just a different dish. 🙂

Trifle Bowls are usually clear bowls with straight sides and a flat bottom. They are great for displaying layered foods. Mine was nowhere to be found, so I grabbed an equally pretty clear bowl and went to work on this dessert—the same outcome. By the way, Where is my dish? Where did I leave it? Did someone borrow it? Maybe it’s time for a new one.

An Impressive Dessert

If you are in need of an impressive dessert, this is it. If you are short on time, you can buy a plain cake from the bakery ( I promise no one will know if it’s a store-bought cake) and cut it into squares. The canned pie filling will work as well. Just from my experience–grab two cans of pie filling. You will need to make the cream cheese filling, but it only takes minutes. Really–only minutes.

This dessert will show up at our next family gathering.

  1. This looks sooo yummy! I love strawberry desserts. Even better that I can use fresh or frozen strawberries based on what I have available.

  2. My mom used to make something similar to this when I was growing up, so reading this made me super nostalgic. It also made me hungry! I need to make it myself sometime soon as a treat for me and my husband!
