Ingredients Needed

Ingredients needed for making pork spare ribs with text overlay.
  • Pork Spareribs: I like to use pork spare ribs most of the time. They become tender and juicy after cooking low and slow in the oven. You could also use baby back ribs if you prefer.
  • Seasonings: Salt, black pepper, garlic powder, seasoning salt, and lemon pepper create a flavorful dry seasoning. Of course, use your favorite seasonings.
  • Barbecue Sauce: Use your favorite bottled barbecue sauce as the base. Sweet Baby Ray’s, Kraft Original, Stubbs, or your favorite local brand all work well.
  • Ketchup: Adds thickness and complements the barbecue flavor.
  • Chili Garlic Sauce: Provides a mild kick of heat. Add more if you enjoy spicy ribs or leave it out for a milder version. This is optional, and the recipe will still be delicious if you omit it.
  • Minced Garlic: Adds extra flavor. I like to use jarred garlic to keep it simple without the extra prep.
  • Honey and Brown Sugar: Provide richness and create sweet-and-spicy ribs with a sticky glaze.

Recipe Variations

  • Extra Spicy: Add more chili garlic sauce or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • Kansas City Style: Use a thick, sweet tomato-based barbecue sauce.
  • Smoky Flavor: Mix smoked paprika into the seasoning blend or use a smoky barbecue sauce.

Step 4: Remove the foil and generously brush the ribs with the barbecue sauce. Return the ribs to the oven uncovered for 45 minutes to 1 hour, brushing with additional sauce during the last 15 minutes if desired.

Expert Tips

  • Keep the ribs tightly covered during the first two hours to trap steam and keep them moist. These are fall of the bone tender.
  • Let the sauce caramelize uncovered during the final bake.
  • For even more caramelization, broil for 2 to 3 minutes at the end while watching carefully.

Storage Tips

  • Fridge: Store leftover ribs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Freezer: Wrap the cooled ribs tightly in aluminum foil, then place them in a freezer bag. Freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Reheat: Place covered ribs in a 300° oven until warmed through, about 20 minutes. Brush with additional barbecue sauce before serving if desired.

Recipe FAQs

Should I cover ribs while baking?

Yes. Covering the ribs during the first two hours helps trap moisture and makes tender pork ribs.

Can I make barbecue ribs ahead of time?

Absolutely. Bake the ribs, refrigerate, then finish them in the oven with sauce before serving.

Can I use baby back ribs instead of pork spare ribs?

Yes. Baby back ribs cook a little faster, so begin checking them about 30 minutes earlier during the final baking stage.

Should I remove the membrane on the back of the ribs?

Yes. Removing the thin membrane from the back of the ribs results in more tender baked barbecue ribs. I have left the membrane, and they were just as good.
