French Onion Chicken Bake

This French Onion Chicken Bake is one delicious dish! Only a few simple ingredients and a huge taste. Baked chicken covered in French onion dip, shredded cheese, and topped with crispy onions.

This dish was inspired by my love of French Onion Dip and chips. I am a snacker, and chips and dip are one of my favorites. So I substituted the chips for the crispy onions and got the taste and the crunch I was looking for. The dish screams flavor– big time!

Why Should I Make This Recipe

Unique: French Onion Dip is great with chips as a snack, but the dip also gives the chicken a deliciously creamy taste.

Easy: This recipe only requires very few ingredients and can be prepped and in the oven in just minutes. Perfect for weeknights.

Great for Guests: This dish is so tasty and simple to prepare you will want to add this to your menu if you have guests over for dinner.

What Ingredients Do I Need to Make this French Onion Chicken Recipe?

Simple ingredients to make this meal complete.

ingredients needed to make French Onion Chicken

Chicken: For this recipe, I used chicken tenders. They are fast and easy to prepare.

Seasonings: Just a few simple seasonings from my cabinet- garlic powder and lemon pepper. They are my 2 favorite seasonings for most of my foods.

French Onion Dip: A carton of “refrigerated” French Onion Dip. Yes, you will need the entire carton to get full coverage of the meat.

Shredded Cheese: I used cheddar cheese because I usually have it on hand, but feel free to use your favorites. Pepper Jack cheese would be amazing.

French Fried Onions: A small can will give you the coverage and the crunch you are looking for in this recipe. If you don’t have this item in your pantry, go ahead and make the dish anyway. It will still be delicious.

Tools Needed:

Baking Dish: An 8″ x 11″ baking dish worked perfectly for my chicken tenders. If you decide to try this recipe with other cuts of chicken– thighs, breast, or legs– then you should go for a bigger baking dish. I would break out the 9″ x 13″ baking dish for all other cuts.

Foil: I usually line all my baking pans and baking dishes with aluminum foil. This makes clean-up more effortless, and I hate to scrub stuck-on messes after dinner.

How to Make French Onion Dip Chicken

Line a baking dish with foil if so desired. I desired it because I hate to scrub dishes. 🙂

Wash chicken and place close together in the baking dish.

Sprinkle with garlic powder and lemon pepper, and one cup of cheese.

Spread French Onion Dip over the top of the chicken.

Bake for an additional 10 minutes.

What makes this French Onion Chicken so Flavorful?

The dip, the seasonings, and the cheese all come together to make every bite unforgettable. The dip is already tasty, so very few seasonings are needed for this dish.

If you are a French onion dip fan, this dish is for you. The chicken is smothered with a whole container of dip, and the flavor is terrific.

How to Store Leftover French Onion Chicken

Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container and refrigerated. They should be eaten within 2-3 days.

Expert Tips

Place your chicken close together while cooking. This keeps all of the toppings from escaping and ending up in the bottom of your dish.

If you decide to use other cuts of meat, your cooking time will change and will take longer to cook.

Baked chicken tenders are done when the internal temperature reaches 165-170 degrees. Always cut into your chicken, and if the juices run clear, your chicken is done. If you are unsure, use a meat thermometer.

Recipe FAQ’s

The answer is no; they are not the same. For this recipe, you should use the refrigerated French Onion Dip. It has a sour cream base and works nicely with this recipe.

French Onion Soup in the can is a different product. It is a condensed soup and not a sour cream-based soup. It is a great soup but not suitable for this recipe.

The topping is simply a can of French Fried Onions. These are the same kind of onions you would use on the top of your Green Bean Casserole. They are usually found close to the soups in the grocery store.
